Rhinoplasty Cost and Insurance

Medically reviewed by Susan Kerrigan, MD and Marianne Madsen on February 10, 2023

What image comes to mind when you think about nose jobs? It might be one of rich people getting multiple cosmetic rhinoplasties to change the shape or size of their noses.  The cost of the procedure to the patient might be irrelevant when money isn’t a problem. However, for most patients, rhinoplasty costs are an essential consideration before undergoing any procedure.

Any discussion of how much a procedure will cost is based on what type of rhinoplasty you are looking to get. Typically, the rate for surgical rhinoplasties might be up to ten times greater than for non-surgical rhinoplasties. This may be one reason why many people are increasingly opting to have non-surgical nose jobs instead of surgical ones.

Cost of Rhinoplasty Surgery

Surgical rhinoplasties are what we typically think of when we talk about a nose job. According to a recent report by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, just over 350,000 nose surgeries were performed in the USA during 2020.

Nose Job - Cost

The average cosmetic surgeon fee for a rhinoplasty procedure works out to about $5,483 per surgery. This figure does not include the cost of anesthesia, operating room facility fees, consultations with doctors, or other related expenses. This will mean the total cost of your nose job might end up being significantly more.

One significant factor in the total cost of the treatment is what the surgeon will need to do. The more complex the operation, the higher the fee. Some plastic surgeons will also charge more based on professional factors, such as where they were trained and their level of experience.

Non-surgical rhinoplasties are a less permanent but also a more economical alternative to surgical rhinoplasty. The procedure involves injecting a dermal filler into the patient’s nose, which allows the surgeon to reshape the nose. According to the same 2020 ASPS report, the average cost for a soft tissue hyaluronic acid filler was $652 per treatment.

Insurance

Insurance for surgical rhinoplasties depends on what the reason is for the procedure. It might be that you are getting a nose job because of a breathing issue that needs correcting. In that case, your health insurance policy may cover the procedure, even if it includes some additional reconstructive surgery.

The best option is to discuss this with your surgeon. They may be able to help you get a pre-authorization from your insurance company to cover the procedure, even if only partially. Many insurance companies also request that patients get a second opinion before agreeing to pay for the surgery, so it’s vital to keep that in mind.

As with all insurance claims, the critical thing to bear in mind is that you will need to check first with your insurance provider. They will let you know what your insurance coverage includes and also what the procedure is for making a claim.

For purely cosmetic rhinoplasty, most health insurance companies will not cover the treatment. This is also the case for non-surgical nose jobs, which most insurance policies also class as cosmetic surgery.

If you are considering a rhinoplasty procedure, especially for cosmetic reasons, you should be aware that you may have to pay for all of your treatment. Most insurance plans will not cover rhinoplasty procedures unless they are done for medical reasons. Even then, you may only be able to claim back some of the costs of rhinoplasty. There are many ways to finance this type of surgery, so you may want to investigate your options.

The cost of any nose job will also depend on the rhinoplasty surgeon. If you decide to use an experienced plastic surgeon, they may charge you more. However, an experienced facial plastic surgeon may be worth the extra expenditure if you are planning more extensive surgery.
