Treatment before surgery is often done in rectal cancer, really for advanced stage rectal cancers what we say are T3 and above, or stage two and above rectal cancers. In those situations, you will be referred to a medical oncologist and / or a radiation oncologist upfront. We do this really to prevent local recurrence of these rectal cancers. It’s been proven with multiple studies that upfront neoadjuvant or pre-surgery therapies do help prevent local recurrence after surgery once everything has been removed or resected.
