To work out if you have reflux, answer the following question. This is called the reflux symptom index. Within the last month, how did the following problems affect you? You rate it from zero to five, with five being severe. Number one, hoarseness or voice problems. Number two, clearing your throat. Number three, excess throat mucus or postnasal drip. Number four, difficulty swallowing. Number five coughing after you sit or eat. Number six, difficulty breathing or choking episodes. Number seven, troublesome or annoying cough. Number eight, sensation of something stuck in the throat or a lump in the throat. Number nine, heartburn, chest pain or indigestion. A score of greater than 13 strongly suggests you could have acid reflux.
