There is no specific test to diagnose early altitude sickness. Hospitals at or near high elevation see this often, and will evaluate you to make sure the illness isn’t something else. Altitude sickness can take on various different forms, depending on the severity. For example, you may receive oxygen if you have trouble breathing, if you have brain swelling or fluid in your lungs, as you will need to go to the hospital for proper care. On the other hand, if you don’t have a severe case, you may simply need to get down to a lower altitude or perhaps be given some other medications.
