Hi, this is Dr. Ananta Subedi. I’m a practicing rheumatologist in Raleigh, North Carolina. I manage multiple autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, gout, osteoarthritis, and many others. These are chronic conditions which require long-term care and support. Most of these conditions are not curable, but with effective treatment, you could live a good quality of life. I usually tell my patients: “After your diagnosis of an autoimmune condition, please consider me as your family member who could help you guide on effectively managing your conditions and improve your quality of life.” Practicing rheumatology is a gratifying experience. You build a long-term relationship with a patient and help them deal with their chronic conditions for the rest of their life. I grew up in a small town in Nepal, where I completed my medical training. I then relocated to the United States and completed my residency training in Internal Medicine, and then fellowship training in Rheumatology at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda.

I also finished Master’s of Public Health (MPH) due to my interest in the public health aspects of the chronic conditions that I treat. I have written multiple book chapters on medications used to treat autoimmune conditions. During my residency training and later in the fellowship, I published derm articles related to lupus, arthritis, and other rheumatic conditions. I had presented my work in multiple rheumatology seminars and meetings. In my spare time, I spend time with my two beautiful kids and my beautiful and hardworking wife. She is also a physician. We spend time doing yoga, playing golf, soccer, and other sports. I’m also passionate to build a rheumatology workforce in Nepal. To do so, I do online lectures to medical students and residents back in Nepal. One of my passions in management of chronic conditions is the concept of shared decision making, where patients play an important role in every decision making process related with their health condition. This helps patients understand their disease, learn the self management techniques, and other long-term management options.
