Many types of anemia, such as the inherited types of anemia, cannot be prevented. Keeping a healthy, balanced diet may prevent anemia caused by iron or vitamin deficiencies. Foods rich in iron content include beef, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts and dried fruits. Animal products are good sources of vitamin B12. Foods rich in folic acid include citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, fortified cereals, and legumes. The inherited types of anemia cannot be prevented.
