The overall prevalence of ankylosing spondylitis is estimated to be up to 0.5% in the US. This is a disease of younger age groups. Symptoms appear before the age of 45. Due to the lack of awareness, it takes several years before the diagnosis. Men are two times more likely to have this condition than women. It affects Caucasians more than African Americans.
