The genes that trigger asthma are shared with those that trigger nasal and eye allergies, eczema, and food allergies. Asthma does run in families. Your risk for having asthma is increased if your parents or siblings have any of these allergic conditions. Studies have also suggested an increased risk for getting asthma, being premature at birth, or having a low birth weight, being obese, living in an overly sterile environment and being exposed to respiratory infections, indoor and outdoor air pollution, indoor allergens and tobacco smoke.
