Balloon sinuplasty or balloon sinus dilation is a form of treatment for chronic sinusitis. It’s typically an office-based procedure that is minimally invasive. It may also be performed in the operating room under general anesthesia, but most of the time we perform this procedure in the office, as it’s minimally invasive. The technology uses a balloon to dilate the natural sinus drainage pathways. In chronic sinusitis, these pathways are narrowed or blocked, resulting in recurrent or acute infections, as well as chronic inflammation. Balloon sinus dilation became FDA-approved in 2005, and since that time it’s proven to be a very safe and effective form of treatment in the right patient.
