If your symptoms are moderate to severe, and you were started on medical treatment, you’ll have periodic follow-up with the urologist. And again, they probably will repeat the symptom score to see if there’s any improvement. They’ll do a test called an ultrasound post-void residual, where they’ll have you urinate and confirm that your bladder empties appropriately after voiding. They may also do what’s called a uroflow where you void into a container that measures the rate at which you’re able to excrete the urine from the bladder. Those tests all used as surrogates to determine how severe the BPH is.
