BPH does seem to have a hereditary component in some men. Hereditary means that there's a genetic component where the susceptibility can be passed down from generation to generation. Certainly we see many families where there's a history of multiple men in different generations requiring some type of procedure to open up the prostate channel because of BPH. So just like eye color, shoe size, skin color, and other features can be passed down from mother and father to child, the size of the prostate and the pattern of prostate growth probably has a complicated genetic component as well.
