It is important that a patient be referred to somebody who actually advertises themselves as a brachial plexus expert. There are surgeons within orthopedic surgery, within plastic surgery and within neurosurgery that treat this, but brachial plexus surgery is not a standard part of any training program. Most surgeons who treat brachial plexus injury have spent the time to educate themselves, traveling to centers across the world that have special expertise in this area, and developing a team at their home institution who treat this in a collaborative environment.
