If you’ve had a total mastectomy, whether that’s on one side or you had both breasts removed, you no longer need a mammogram, but it’s still very important to work with your general surgeon or breast surgeon, or even your medical oncologist, you still need a clinical breast exam. And we recommend getting clinical breast exams every six months. But that’s one of the upsides of a total mastectomy on either side, is that you no longer need a mammogram. Now, be mindful, if you’ve had only a single mastectomy and you still have a breast on the other side, you need a mammogram on that breast every six months.
