Sometimes I see patients who’ve had reconstruction in the past. And one of the questions that they ask me a lot is, is there anything to be worried about with my gel implants? I’ve had them for 10 years, what’s going on? What should I look for? The reality is that their gel implants are a man made object and that they do have a shelf life. We typically say that about 20 years, the implant should be removed or replaced. Even though you’ve had gel implant reconstruction in the past or implant-based reconstruction in the past, that does not mean that you’re not a candidate for a different type of reconstruction, including autologous reconstruction, in the future.
