I commonly see patients scared of autologous reconstruction operations. We are making another surgical site, another incision, and this can be a daunting idea when you’re going through a mastectomy procedure. But the reality of this is, this is a skin and soft tissue operation. The pain is very manageable after these operations. We employ a lot of non-narcotic techniques to help with that. We use long acting local anesthetics in the abdominal wall to help prevent the donor site pain. We also use non-narcotic systemic medications to help mobilize the patients early and quickly, which greases their recovery process and speeds it up.
