So a very common question that I get is, “When I have my mastectomy and my initial reconstruction, am I done?” Well with mastectomies, when we do breast reconstruction, it’s always a stage procedure. Whether you go the autologous route or implant-based reconstruction, you will always have a second operation or you will need a second operation at least three months down the road. The reason for this is that with the initial reconstruction, the focus is developing the breast mound. At the second operation, we remove the expander and place a soft silicone implant, or develop the mound in a more cosmetically pleasing shape.
