Breast Reconstruction – Overview

share

Transcript

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure performed to restore the breast after its removal, such as in mastectomy, partial removal, such as lumpectomy, or congenital deformities. A mastectomy may be done to fight breast cancer, or it can be done for patients who are high risk because of a strong family history or genetic risk factors. The public has become more aware of breast reconstruction because of celebrities, such as Angelina Jolie and others describing their personal experiences. For many breast cancer patients, cancer and the surgery itself can leave physical and emotional scars that make many survivors feel self-conscious about their appearance. Breast reconstruction offers psychological benefits for these patients by restoring femininity, self-confidence, and one’s sense of self. Breast reconstruction often involves multiple surgical techniques performed in stages and can either begin at the time of mastectomy or be delayed until a later date. Breast reconstruction generally falls into two categories. Implant-based reconstruction, or flap based reconstruction. Implant reconstruction relies on breast implants to help form a new breast mount. Flap or autologous reconstruction uses the patient’s own tissues from another part of the body to form a new breast. Your surgeon will help you decide.
