The simple answer is yes, but it can’t be completely prevented, and not all cancers can be prevented. Rough estimates are somewhere along the lines of 40% of all cancers are probably preventable. It’s not easy. The hard part is that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, everything that’s good for your heart, is also good for cancer prevention, but these aren’t easy. But here are some rules of thumb. Avoiding tobacco exposure, maintaining an active lifestyle instead of a sedentary lifestyle, avoiding excessive alcohol intake, avoiding excessive sun exposure. And if you are exposed to the sun, being diligent about covering up or using sunblock or sunscreen, it’s also important that you discuss with your doctor and follow through on recommended cancer screening protocols that are appropriate for your age and your risk factors.
