For patients with symptomatic spinal cord compression and symptomatic myelopathy, there’s well documented evidence that continued pressure on the spinal cord will cause a gradual decline in function over time with a worsening of hand clumsiness, worsening of gait imbalance and possibly developing a bowel and bladder incontinence. As a result of this, when someone is symptomatic from spinal cord compression, surgery is usually recommended.
