Hand washing and disinfection can prevent the spread of bacteria and therefore minimize chronic sinusitis. Minimizing nasal swelling, congestion also helps by improving mucus drainage. This is done by controlling allergies with appropriate medication, using decongestants to temporarily reduce swelling, and doing saline rinses like a neti pot and similar device. It is important to use distilled or boiled when doing nasal irrigations to avoid any unwanted bacteria.
