Colon Cancer – Ethnic Groups

People of all nationalities and ethnic groups are affected by colon cancer, but not all are impacted the same. Certain ethnic groups such as African-Americans have a greater risk of colon cancer than do people of other races. African-Americans also have a higher chance of being diagnosed at a later stage and with a higher mortality rate. Because of higher risk, the recommended screening age for this ethnic group is 45. In general, African-Americans also have the highest burden for each of the most common cancers, with a combined death rate 25% higher than whites. People of Ashkenazi Jewish descent have one of the highest risks of colorectal cancer in the world. Asian Americans, Hispanics, American Indians and Alaska natives are also more affected by colon cancer than other ethnic groups.
