Because pain is such a common component of fractures in the wrist, medication is an essential tool in helping to provide patient comfort after these injuries and after surgical treatment for them as well. Initial treatment will consist of pain medications, such as ibuprofen or Aleve or Tylenol to help minimize swelling, inflammation, and pain. If pain is more severe and persists despite those basic medications, then sometimes the short course of narcotic analgesics will be necessary. These are serious medications and they have to be prescribed and monitored carefully by your doctor, but they will often help to minimize pain that is not otherwise being addressed with more standard medication.
