When we talk about fractures, we talk about specific different types of bone injury. The three main types are simple fractures, which can be described as a clean break in the bone. We have what are called comminuted fractures, which is a fancy term that simply means that the bone is fragmented into many small pieces instead of a simple clean break. And then we have open fractures, which are not just a break in the bone, but also involve soft tissue injuries with exposure of the bone to the outside environment. Those fractures are much more serious and require much more aggressive treatment in order to prevent severe complications.
