If your visit to the emergency room was related to alcohol or drug use, there’s a good chance that you have a problem that needs attention. Hopefully you feel a little better after your visit. Now is a great time to focus on yourself. Addiction is a complicated disease that sometimes needs medication treatment, sometimes needs counseling, and sometimes benefits from group therapy. Different people need different types of help, and most people with addictions find a combination of approaches is what is needed to kick their habit. If you are ready to take the next step to get clean, you can get free 24 hour help from the national hotline, +1 800-662-4357. Other resources include your insurance company and the local resources your ER providers suggested. The ER is just one step in your recovery and focuses on keeping you safe from harming yourself or others, treating overdoses and helping you safely get sober. The ER can also treat withdrawal. I hope that all of my patients take the opportunity to get one step closer to getting clean, but we all know in the ER, that addiction is one of the most difficult chronic diseases to treat.
