The main reason to return to the emergency department include an infection, or if the cut pulls apart. It’s normal to have a little bit of blood colored leakage for the first day or so. Pulsing blood or saturating dressings from a regular laceration repair are not normal. As far as infection goes, if there is redness more than an inch from the cut, or if there is streaking redness towards your body, if there’s thick yellow pus from the wound, or if you have a fever without another illness, you should definitely seek medical care from your primary care team or in the ER.
