Emergency Room – Tests

The number and type of tests done in the ER depends on your age, your symptoms and other health problems. It’s not uncommon to have an EKG and urine screen to check for signs of heart or kidney problems. Blood tests for kidney function and heart damage may also be sent. If you had room-spinning dizziness or any symptoms resembling a stroke, the ER provider may order a CT scan of your head. You would only be sent home if your CT scan was normal and your symptoms resolved. Less commonly, the team may order some other tests like ultrasounds of the heart or kidneys. These tests are usually ordered and followed up by primary providers after discharge from the emergency department.
