Diabetes could also cause erectile dysfunction. The reason behind that one is, it’s twofold. Number one, it could affect your nerves. The other one is it can affect your arterial supply. First off, when it’s infecting your nerves is when you have uncontrolled diabetes, those increased sugar levels could cause permanent damage to the nerves. And as we discussed earlier, the nerves are what stimulates the dilation of the arteries that increases blood flow to the penis. Secondly, diabetes could also affect the arterial flow. In doing so it decreases the lumen of the arteries. And again, decreased luminal capacity ultimately leads to decreased blood flow to the penis and a poor erection.
