Occasionally we’ll get a penile ultrasound, specifically, a penile ultrasound with Doppler. And what that does is it assesses the penile arterial inflow and then the venous outflow resistance. As I’d mentioned earlier, you need good inflow of arterial blood supply in the penis, and then you need to have some form of resistance from the venous end where the blood is actually staying in the penis, causing a good, firm erection. In addition, the penile ultrasound will also let us see if there’s any plaques on the penis or on the corporal bodies of what we’d like to call them. This is typically a sign of Peyronie’s disease, and I’ll discuss that a little later, but ultimately what the penile ultrasound lets us do is we take an inside look at the penis and it really helps us identify the causes of erectile dysfunction.
