Once the method of inheritance was understood, meaning that genes are passed down from one generation to the next, progress was rapidly made in starting to identify genes that ran in families and ultimately are caused by a single gene mutation. Gene therapy is the field that now has emerged where those single powerful gene mutations are treated by introducing a new unmutated form of that gene into cells. Thus rectifying the problem.
