Unlike other forms of arthritis, gout does not produce constant pain unless you’ve had it for a long time. Oftentimes you just have these attacks or flares, and then you have new pain in between called the intercritical period. As I mentioned, a flare can last days, weeks for some patients and sometimes it can be brought on by eating shellfish, drinking alcohol, if you’re dehydrated, foods in high fructose, stress, and climate can cause a gout flare. Patients also can have a flare after surgery, be really immobilized from that attack. Some types of food are worse for gout, for example, organ meat, seafood, play a big part in a gout flare it’s recommended that you cut down on those, on food to help reduce gout flares. Sometimes medications that are being changed if you’re on water pills, some other medications, low dose aspirin can also cause gout flares. So there’s a whole host of medications that can cause gout flares. And there’s some that are good for gout, that you can talk to your doctor, but there are some meds that affect how many flares you get.
