Hematuria – Treatment

share

Transcript

Treatment for hematuria depends on the underlying cause. The treatments include the option of antibiotics for urinary tract infections, extra corporeal shockwave lithotripsy, or other means of treatment for kidney or urethral stones. Transurethral resection for bladder tumors. Lithotripsy for bladder calculi, et cetera. Since there are so many different causes of hematuria, the treatment needs to be based upon the precise diagnosis. Again, hemorrhagic cystitis can be caused by urinary infection, readily and easily treatable with antibiotics. Other causes of hematuria are urinary tract stones that may be present in the kidneys, ureters or bladder. And these may require shockwave lithotripsy or laser lithotripsy. Another common cause of hematuria is benign enlargement of the prostate. And this can be effectively managed with medications or surgical procedures to alleviate the obstruction and bleeding. If a bladder tumor is found to be the underlying cause, it will require a transurethral resection of the bladder using a special instrument that can excise the tumor in piecemeal fashion, cauterize the base of the tumor and remove the tumor from the bladder via irrigation through the instrument to allow pathological examination of the specimen. If a renal mass, a kidney mass is found to be the cause of the hematuria, it may require surgical removal of the mass and at times removal of the entire kidney, depending on its size and location.
