Patients who are older, more obese patients, are oftentimes at higher risk for developing herniated discs. Certain occupations with repetitive bending or physically demanding jobs can lead to a higher incidence of herniated discs. In addition, smoking is said to be linked to a higher risk of developing disc herniations, as well as genetic factors that could play a role.
