Most people will not need surgery for disc herniation. Herniated disc surgery is usually discussed after conservative management with physical therapy along with interventional pain management techniques do not improve symptoms. If there is worsening or continued motor, sensory or neurological deficits that affect daily living for more than six weeks, then surgery may be indicated.
