Incontinence – Types

December 5, 2021

The two most common types of incontinence are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is the most common type of urinary incontinence, and it occurs when you have leakage due to increased pressure on your pelvic floor. This can be caused by doing simple actions like coughing or sneezing, or even exercising. When you have a sudden and strong urge to urinate, but can’t make it to the toilet in time, you have urge incontinence. This is also referred to as overactive bladder, and it’s often associated with frequency and urgency. Mixed incontinence is when someone experiences both symptoms of stress and urge incontinence. There are also people who experience what is called overflow incontinence. This is when the bladder muscles cannot push out all of the urine, and so the leftover urine builds up and literally spills over. People will often leak throughout the day and it is typically related to weak muscles. Suppose you have bladder incontinence without even realizing that. In that case, you have what is called passive incontinence.
