Influenza – Antiviral Medicine

Transcript

Oseltamivir, also known as Tamiflu, and other antiviral medications have been studied as medications that help reduce the length and intensity of influenza infection. Antiviral treatment works best when started within two days of becoming sick with flu symptoms. These drugs can lessen the fever and flu symptoms and shorten the time you are sick by about a day. For people at high risk of serious complications from influenza, early treatment with an antiviral drug can reduce need for hospitalization and other serious complications, including risk of death. These medications do have side effects, however. One of the more concerning side effects for oseltamivir is psychosis and delirium. If otherwise healthy adults have mild or moderate course of infection, many doctors do not recommend antiviral medicine.
