EBUS, E B U S, which stands for endobronchial ultrasound. It’s a bronchoscope that goes down again through the mouth, except for this scope has an ultrasound probe on the end. And just like an ultrasound during a pregnancy that ultrasound allows you to see what’s beyond the probe. So the end of the camera is still showing you the inside of the airway, but because it has that ultrasound probe, you’re able to then also see the outside of the airway, which is where the lymph nodes are sitting. There’s a needle that comes out of that scope once you’ve found a lymph node, and that needle goes through the airway, into the lymph node and pulls some of that lymph node tissue out for sampling. The pathologist is able to look at those cells and determine if there are any cancer cells within that specimen.
