Risk factors for developing meningitis include close contact with someone with meningitis. Fortunately, most cases of meningitis are not passed on to other people. Other risk factors include conditions which suppress the immune system or cause immune system dysfunction. Those include diabetes, HIV, immunosuppressing drugs such as corticosteroids used to treat other conditions.
