Migraine can involve a very severe headache, often on one side of the head, which we refer to as unilateral. It can often have a throbbing component. Other symptoms that occur with migraine commonly are nausea and vomiting, light sensitivity and sound sensitivity. Any physical activity can make the migraine worse. Some people with migraine will also have aura. Auras are typically short-lived, lasting minutes to maybe an hour. Most frequently occurring before the migraine, sometimes with or even after a migraine. The most common aura is visual. Visual symptoms can include seeing shimmering lights, zigzagging lines that increase in size or spread throughout your visual field, spots in your vision. The next most common types of auras typically are sensory. So you might have tingling or numbness before the onset of headache. And other types of auras include vision loss and less commonly even weakness, which can persist for days or weeks.
