Advance directives fall generally under three categories:

  • Living will, which details the kind of care you want to receive when you are not able to speak for yourself.
  • Durable power of attorney is a legal document that designates a specific person who will be speaking for you.
  • DNR order is a physician order entered in your medical record at your request. It tells the medical team when you do not want life saving or life prolonging treatments to continue.
