- Are you a Doctor?
Continue taking all of your previously prescribed medicines. In addition, your emergency department provider also prescribed one or two antibiotics. The type of antibiotic depends on your allergies, the common types of infectious agents in your community and your underlying health conditions. If you have been hospitalized recently, for any reason, you may need additional or stronger antibiotics. Sometimes the doctor can collect phlegm from your cough to grow the bacteria causing your infection. If the bacteria is resistant to your antibiotic, the team may call in a different prescription for you. Your care team may have also prescribed a cough suppressant to reduce your cough or an expectorant to help you expel mucus. Usually you can also take a fever reducer or ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help with your fever.
