Most bacterial pneumonias are not very infectious. Meaning it’s unlikely you could transmit the infection to your close contacts. Most pneumonias are bacterial, but enough are caused by viruses that your pneumonia may actually be viral. Influenza and coronavirus are two common causes of viral pneumonia. With viral infections, you are more likely to transmit your infection to a friend or a loved one, especially when coughing or sneezing. Hand-washing and covering coughs are the best prevention, as are masks of any type. Some diseases are airborne on very small particles, which is why six feet or more is sometimes recommended for distancing.
