The treatment options for poison ivy may vary depending on the severity of the flare or rash. For some patients, a strong prescription formula is necessary. Most patients can benefit from topical steroid creams, such as triamcinolone or clobetasol ointment to help relieve itching and swelling. However, for those with more severe symptoms, such as fevers or a greater area of involvement, particularly on delicate areas, such as the face and genital region, intramuscular steroid injections and oral steroid tapers or tablets may be suggested. Most treatments last about a week.
