Symptoms are similar to those experienced in other depressive episodes, such as problems with eating, reduced energy or pleasure in things, difficulty in sleeping, sustained feelings of low mood, feelings of guilt, helplessness or worthlessness. However, they can also include features about the baby, such as worries about their welfare or the mother’s ability to look after the baby. In some rare cases, psychotic features may develop which both mother and baby at risk. So your doctor may ask you about thoughts of self harm or harm to the baby as part of an overall assessment of symptoms and of your mental state.
