Are there are any complications which can occur as a result of having psoriasis? Yes. There are definitely complications that can occur due to having psoriasis, particularly if it is untreated. Living with chronic inflammation that has not been addressed properly will often lead to more uncontrolled inflammation. In medicine, it is generally easier to tackle a problem the sooner you try to tackle it, rather than waiting for it to explode. In particular, psoriasis is associated with joint disease called arthritis, which can lead to deformities and impairment in mobility, particularly if not addressed early. Plaques that have not been able to clear can also lead to prolonged and extensive hyperpigmentation or scarring, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that may take years to finally fade. Untreated psoriasis can worsen significantly and become more problematic if not addressed. Complications of psoriasis also include the following: you’re at greater risk of developing other conditions, including psoriatic arthritis, which causes pain, stiffness and swelling around the joints, eye conditions, such as conjunctivitis blepharitis and uveitis, obesity, type two diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, other autoimmune diseases, such as celiac disease, sclerosis, and the inflammatory bowel disease known as Crohn’s disease. There’s also mental health conditions that can accompany psoriasis such as low self-esteem and even depression.
