Sciatica refers to pain that radiates down the path of the sciatic nerve. Sciatic nerve is one of the largest nerves in the body, and pain that travels down this path usually starts in the buttock, goes into the back or the side of the thigh, into the leg, and occasionally into the top or the bottom of the foot. Sciatica can be associated with sharp shooting pain, but also numbness and tingling that travels down the leg. And occasionally, but rarely, weakness in the leg.
