Shingles is caused by reactivation of varicella zoster virus. After primary infection with VZV, it remains dormant and the dorsal root ganglia nerve cells in the spine for many years, becomes reactivated, and migrates down sensory nerves of the skin to cause zoster. It is unclear why it affects only particular nerve fiber.
