Other products that may be used to relieve pain and itching from shingles include rest, pain relief, a protective ointment that can be applied to the rash to simulate wound healing, such as petroleum jelly, local anesthetic applications such as topical lidocaine, which is available over the counter at low strengths without a prescription, topical capsaicin, which is a supplement for pain or itching and non-steroidal, acetaminophen and opioids are generally not very helpful.
