The most important way that you can prevent getting shingles is by getting the shingles vaccine, especially as you get older, your immunity against the varicella zoster virus decreases. Many health organizations recommend adults who are 50 or older to get the shingles vaccine. I’ve personally had shingles, which is extremely painful. I recommend the vaccine, particularly for those of you who are older, since the vaccine can prevent chronic pain that follows shingles. You should also stay away from anyone who is in the contagious stages of chickenpox or shingles, particularly those with open blisters.
