Treatment options for shingles may vary according to severity. While the majority of patients seek treatment, some postpone treatment for some reason. For severe cases of zoster, in which the lesions may be disseminated or may affect its crucial areas such as the eye, IV antivirals are sometimes recommended along with hospital admission to minimize the risk of dire consequences. Sometimes it may be given for a longer duration as well. While the majority of patients experience a dermatomal band of the rash in the affected areas, pain can vary greatly from dull and constant to a burning sensation. Intensity can also vary from mild to severe. Sharp stabbing pains may develop from time to time accompanied by an area of tenderness on the affected skin.
