There are various causes for SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. These include complications from abdominal surgeries, specifically gastric bypass, gastrectomy, surgical or structural abnormalities within the small intestines, such as intestinal adhesions from tissue scarring or protrusion of tissue pouches causing intestinal diverticulosis, and specific medical conditions. These include Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, scleroderma, radiation, enteritis and really any condition that slows the motility through the small intestine.
